The writings by Fred Forest

“Functioning and dysfunctioning of contemporary art – A lawsuit as an example”

The newspaper Le Monde on the subject of contemporary art, wrote on April 4, 2000:
"Open letters to the minister, controversies, suspicions, misunderstandings, nothing has been missing in recent months. Beyond administrative questions, the debate concerns a crucial point: what should be the extent of state support in the field of creation? More and more artists regret having as their interlocutors the "creation inspectors" of the Délégation aux Arts Plastiques, whom they suspect of cronyism and denounce the lack of transparency."

This book tends to reveal the limits and contradictions of a system which can no longer continue in the current elite form for the benefit of a handful of privileged people, always the same, who benefit from complacency and public manna. Fight of the earthen pot against the iron pot, this is the detailed description of my trial up to the Council of State against the Centre Georges Pompidou, and through it, against the public institutions of contemporary art for their refusal of transparency on acquisitions and their failure to respect the law of 1978 on public accounting.

Beyond art, the approach undertaken here is, above all, a citizen approach asking the true question of the use of public funds and that of the mission of culture in a democracy.
