Five years ahead of cultural institutions, Fred Forest is already using telematics in two flagship exhibitions, ELECTRA (1983) and the BOURSE DE L'IMAGINAIRE (1982).
He also used Minitel to disseminate his Manifeste de la communication in 1983, and in Toulon in his Zenaïde and Charlotte action in 1989 to attack the media with the Musée des Beaux-arts de Toulon for its centenary. In 1987, this debate brought together two key artists, ORLAN and FRED FOREST, who were the first to use telematics in France, and Eduardo Kac in Brazil. It's worth noting that the three theorists who shared this debate - Abraham Moles, René Berger and Manfred Eisenbeis, Director of the Köln School of New Media - have always been friends and supporters of Fred Forest. They met at the Institut de l'Environnement in Paris in 1972 and met again often at the Festival des arts électroniques directed by Rinaldo Bianda.
LONG BIOGRAPHY OF FRED FOREST
Fred Forest has a special place in contemporary art. Both by his personality and by his pioneering practices which mark his work. He is mainly known today for having used one by one most of the communication media that have appeared over the last fifty years. He is co-founder of three artistic movements: those of sociological art, the aesthetics of communication and ethics in art.
He represented France at the 12th São Paulo Biennale (Communication Prize) in 1973, at the 37th Venice Biennale in 1976 and at Documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977.
